Tonight we went off to see Death Cab For Cutie play at Brixton Academy. I was thinking it was going to be a pretty cruisy concert as their music strikes me as being pretty laided back & very lyric focused. Was I wrong... Death Cab kicked arse live. I thought I was going to go deaf! The lead singer, Ben Gibbard, was possessed at the get go. He ran from keyboards, to mic, to drums, guitar, then the bas & back again. Ontop of all of this, having a very quirky & likable voice. Death Cab, from what I can tell, is basically a vehicle for his enourmous talent (although the drummer also seemed pretty amazing). At one stage, while Ben Gibbard was on singing with a guitar, a roadie came on stage & assembled another drum kit in front of the existing drum kit. Over runs * for a bit of simulataneous drum action!
As fabulous as they were, I dont think I'll be rushing to see them live any time soon. For me, the great thing about their songs is the clever lyrics & the stories they tell. This was indistiguishable from all the rocking going on on stage. If you didn't know the lyrics to the songs by the time you got there, you had no chance at the concert.
Get to see them if you want a high energy night out. Buy their albums (particularly Transatlantasism & Plans) if you want to get to kniow their music.
